Monte Hellman directed the 1974 movie Cockfighter from a screenplay by Charles Willeford, who adapted it from his own novel.

Starring Warren Oates, it’s no big surprise this isn’t a romantic story, but rather it’s a movie about cockfighting. Maybe they are the same thing really.
